“A Gospel To Live and Die Upon”

Romans 15:19b

So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

Thoughts for Today:

Charles Spurgeon once wrote, "God be thanked for the simplicity of the gospel. The longer I live, the more I bless God that we have not received a classical gospel, nor a mathematical gospel, nor a metaphysical gospel; it is not a gospel confined to scholars and men of genius, but a poor man's gospel, a ploughman's gospel; for that is the kind of gospel which we can live upon and die upon."

I couldn't agree more. The simplicity of the Gospel is powerful. So we shouldn't be embarrassed by it, or back away from sharing it. And we don't need to feel that delving into more esoteric understandings, or becoming involved in abstract symbolism is somehow better and more pleasing to God. It is not. There is no need for us to go deeper than Paul. In our passage today Paul tells us, "I go everywhere [he had a 1,400 mile route], to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ." It's a message for everyone -- scholars and poor men alike. It's easy to appreciate and understand. And as Charles Spurgeon said, "for that is the kind of gospel which we can live upon and die upon."

Questions to Ponder:

Have you made your relationship with Jesus more complicated than necessary? Is salvation a matter of do's and don'ts? Is it God's intention to make it difficult to please Him? I don't think so -- in fact I know God wants our burden to be light. Jesus said in Matthew 11:30: "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Do you feel that way? Perhaps we need to revisit the simplicity of the Gospel message. The Good News of Jesus Christ!
