“"A Built-in Conflict"”

2 Corinthians 5:2

Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling…

Thoughts for Today:

As long as we have a mortal body, there will always be an adversarial relationship between our perfect, born-again spirit and our imperfect flesh. Our spirit is eternal, yet our physical body is subject to decay. So there is a built-in conflict that causes an internal groaning and longing for the time we will receive our glorified bodies.

In our passage today, Paul describes the yearning he had for his glorified body; but not because he was defeated by life and wanted to escape. Paul was one of the most victorious Christians who has ever walked the face of the earth. He also knew the truth of this life: No matter how closely any mortal person walks with the Lord, they can never fully experience the infiniteness of God while living in a finite body. (1 Corinthians 13:12: "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.)

Questions to Ponder:

Many people read our passage today and think of a heaven where we will all be given big, custom, Beverly Hills types of mansions when we arrive. But that's not what Paul's talking about. He's speaking of our resurrected bodies -- custom made for eternity. Isn't that something incredible to look forward to? No barrier between our Lord and us. What a wonderful eternity awaits!
