“Where is the Shade?”

1 Corinthians 10:1-2

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

Thoughts for Today:

After God's people were released from bondage to Pharaoh, the Israelites passed through the parted waters of the Red Sea. From that point on, wherever and whenever they traveled, they were led by a cloud. You might ask, "Why a cloud?" Because as the desert temperatures rose, the Lord provided a covering of shade to protect His people from the heat. All the Israelites had to do receive its protection was to keep pace with it -- moving when it moved and stopping when it stopped.

For me, this is a great illustration of the way God works in each of our lives. It's how He guides us and moves us from where we are to where He wants us to be. People get so worked up -- struggling and striving to find God's will for their lives -- when it's really very simple. Rather than asking, "Where should I go? What should I do?" We need only look for the shade.

The Lord says to each one of us, "Get out of the sun. Stop sweating, burning and blistering. Stop searching for Me -- I'm right here. I've already completed the work. Join Me in the comfort and coolness of the shade."

Questions to Ponder:

Whenever I feel overwhelmed in ministry, I stop for a moment to remember God's provision for us as illustrated by our passage today. I realize, if I am burdened and overworked it's because I'm out toiling in the sun -- my work rather than the Lord's. Then, I look for the shade, "Lord, what would you have me do?" If you want to be effective in ministry or any other endeavor, you must always look for the shade. When was the last time you paused for a moment to seek the Lord's will? Where is His covering for your life? Will you accept His provision?
