1 Corinthians 3:10
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.
Now Paul switches metaphors -- moving from agriculture to construction. Jesus used similar construction concepts in Matthew 16:18: "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." So did Jesus mean the church was to be built upon the man Peter, or something else?
For the answer, let's back up a couple of verses to Peter's first response in answer to Jesus' question about His identity (Matthew 16:16): "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ. Therefore, he possessed the necessary foundation upon which to build the church -- the personal identity of Jesus Christ!
The church is not built upon the number of new small group formations, outreaches to un-churched families, door to door evangelism, or even the Apostle Peter. It is built upon Jesus Christ -- our Savior, our Friend, and our Lord.
What foundation is your church laying? One based on modern principles of community demographics and outreach, or Jesus Christ? Which will succeed eternally?
