“The Problem with a Covered Head”

1 Corinthians 11:4

Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.

Thoughts for Today:

Even to the present day, Jewish rabbis teach that the wearing of a hat or other covering is a sign of humility before God. They use Exodus 34:29-33 as an illustration of how Moses covered his face after he met the Lord on Mount Sinai: "When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face."

Yet Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 3:13, there was another reason Moses covered his face: "We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away." In other words, the veil Moses wore was to keep the Israelites from seeing that the glory of God was disappearing from his face. In our passage today, Paul tells us we are free from the requirement of following rituals to demonstrate humility. In fact, just the opposite is true: When we use false signs of humility we dishonor our head -- which is Jesus Christ.

Questions to Ponder:

What veils do you use as a sign of humility before God? Is it kneeling, raising your hands in worship, or bowing your head in prayer? Is it just a covering or a true outward reflection of the condition of your heart? Other people can be fooled, but God cannot.
